Editorial policy
How WhenRome researches, writes, verifies, and updates travel content. Travel decisions affect your safety and your money — we treat that as YMYL ("your money or your life") information and apply the standards Google asks for.
Editorial principles
- Useful before optimized. Every page starts with the question: what does someone actually need to know to make a decision? Keyword ranking is downstream of that.
- Sourced and verifiable. Climate data comes from named meteorological agencies; visa rules from official government portals; tipping and safety advice from on-the-ground consensus rather than tourism-board fluff.
- Honest, not promotional. If a destination is dangerous to certain travelers in certain months, we say so. If a city's safety reputation has earned tourist warnings, we surface them rather than burying them.
- No undisclosed affiliate deals on travel safety pages. Visa, emergency, health, and tipping pages contain no monetised links. Where commercial relationships exist (travel insurance, currency exchange), they're disclosed in plain language.
- Hand-curated, not AI-generated. The data tables and editorial copy are written and reviewed by humans on our team. We use tooling to assemble pages from those data sources, but the source content is human work.
How we fact-check
- Climate data — cross-checked between Open-Meteo and at least one independent meteorological source for any new destination before publishing.
- Visa and entry rules — verified against the destination country's official immigration page within 30 days of publication. Re-verified on every page update.
- Emergency numbers — taken from each country's official government emergency-services page, never from third-party listicles.
- Power plugs and voltage — verified against IEC 60083 and World Standards database.
- Live data (forecasts, KP-index, seismic alerts) — pulled directly from the operating agency (NOAA, USGS, Open-Meteo) at page-load time, not cached editorial copy.
Updates and corrections
Every page shows a Last updated date. We aim to update high-traffic guides quarterly and lower-traffic guides annually. Live-data sections refresh whenever the page loads.
If you find an error — outdated visa rule, wrong emergency number, stale tipping guidance — please email our team. We correct verified errors within 7 days and publish corrections transparently.
Conflicts of interest
WhenRome runs display advertising (Google AdSense) and may add specific affiliate partnerships in the future (travel insurance, currency, eSIM cards). When we do:
- Affiliate relationships will be disclosed in plain language at the top of any page that contains affiliate links.
- We do not change editorial recommendations to favor commercial partners.
- Pages covering safety, visa, emergency, and health information remain affiliate-free.
Privacy & user data
Personalization features (favorites, saved trips, climate quiz scores) use browser localStorage — your data stays on your device. We don't sell or share user information. Analytics are anonymized.
