Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the weather forecast?
Forecasts come from Open-Meteo, which combines outputs from major national weather services (NOAA, ECMWF, JMA, etc.). Accuracy is excellent for the next 1–3 days, very good through about day 7, and increasingly approximate beyond that. Always cross-check with an official forecast for safety-critical decisions.
Where do the monthly climate averages come from?
We use long-run historical normals (typically 30-year averages) from public meteorological agencies. Currently we have detailed climate data for 36 cities, hand-curated. The dataset is expanding — if your destination is missing, the page will say so and fall back to live forecast data.
Why doesn't my city have monthly climate data?
We're rolling out climate data city-by-city, starting with the most-searched destinations. Cities without averages still have full live weather and 10-day forecasts. If you'd like a specific city prioritized, drop us a note via the contact page.
Are the public holidays complete and accurate?
We use the date-holidays open-source library, which covers ~200 countries with rule-based holiday calculation (handling DST shifts, weekend observance, religious holidays, etc.). Coverage is best for major economies and slightly less complete for some smaller territories. If you spot an error, please report it.
Can I save my favorite cities or trip ideas?
Yes — sign in (a free account, kept on your device) to save favorite cities and named trip ideas with month windows. Everything is stored locally in your browser. We don't have a backend yet, so favorites won't sync across devices.
How do I plan a trip by climate?
Click the ✨ Discover button in the top bar. Set your preferred temperature range, target month, and any vibe (beach, popular, island), and we'll rank destinations by climate fit — automatically excluding cities currently in their hurricane or monsoon season.
Why are some weather icons different from what I actually see outside?
City weather icons reflect the latest forecast snapshot, which may be a few minutes behind real conditions. Open the city detail panel for the most up-to-date current weather and the next 10 days.
Is WhenRome free?
Yes, completely free. We may show ads to keep the lights on, but the core features (map, forecast, climate, calendar, Discover, favorites, trip ideas) are all free with no premium tier.
Do you have an app?
Not yet — WhenRome is a fully responsive web app, so it works in any modern browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. You can add it to your home screen on iOS (tap Share → Add to Home Screen) for an app-like experience.
How do I print a calendar?
Open any country calendar (e.g. /calendar/us/2026/) and click the 🖨 Print button — or just press Cmd/Ctrl+P. The print stylesheet hides the site chrome and lays out all 12 months with the holiday list on a clean page, optimized for letter or A4 paper.
What's with the name 'WhenRome'?
It's from the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" — adapt to where you are. Our take: when planning a trip, go when the weather is right. The site works for anywhere, not just Rome (though Rome's a great place too).
