How to plan a great day trip
- Leave early. Most popular day-trip destinations are mobbed by 11 AM. A 7 AM departure beats 90% of tour buses.
- Buy train/bus tickets the night before on the airline-style ticket apps (Trenitalia, SNCF Connect, ÖBB) — same-day at the station often means standing-room or sold out on peak routes.
- Pack one bag of essentials — sunscreen, water bottle, layers, snacks, charger. Tourist towns mark up bottled water 3-5×.
- Have a backup plan — if the famous site is fully booked or closed, check the SECOND option on the list before you set out.
- Eat one big sit-down meal locally rather than two mediocre ones — day-trip towns have one or two great restaurants and lots of tourist traps.
