Universal pet travel rules
- Start 6+ months early for countries with quarantine (Australia, NZ, Iceland, Japan, UK). The vaccination + blood test + waiting periods CANNOT be rushed.
- ISO microchip is the gold standard. If your pet has an older non-ISO chip, get an ISO one + bring the scanner. Some countries reject non-ISO.
- Get the official health certificate from your vet within the country-specific window (usually 10 days of travel).
- Pet-friendly airline fees range $75-1000+. Book with the airline directly — limited spots per flight.
- Sedation is a bad idea in cargo — vets advise against it because reduced ability to regulate temperature at altitude is dangerous.
