About WhenRome
WhenRome helps travelers answer the most important question before any trip: when should I go? Pick any city on the world map and see live weather, a 10-day forecast, and monthly climate averages — so you can match the season to your trip, not the other way around.
Why we built it
Every traveler has the same frustration: you find a destination you love, then realize you booked it during monsoon season, hurricane peak, or the one rainy month of the year. Tools to help with this are scattered across weather apps, climate sites, and travel blogs. WhenRome puts it all in one place — weather, climate, and the calendar — visualized on an interactive world map.
What's on the site
- Interactive world map — 308 cities, with markers showing live weather conditions at a glance. Hover for temperature and local time, click for the full picture.
- 10-day forecasts for every city, with sunrise/sunset times and seasonal-hazard warnings (hurricanes, monsoons, typhoons).
- Monthly climate averages for our growing dataset of detailed cities — average highs, lows, rainfall, rain days.
- Discover mode — find a destination by setting your preferred temperature, month, and vibe. Skip storm-season cities automatically.
- Yearly calendars for ~200 countries, with public holidays highlighted and a clean print layout.
- City-by-month landing pages with auto-generated climate copy — perfect for "X in March" type planning.
Where the data comes from
- Live weather + 10-day forecasts — Open-Meteo, an open-data weather API refreshed continuously.
- Monthly climate averages — Long-run historical normals from public meteorological sources, currently 36 cities curated by hand. We're expanding the dataset based on what people search for.
- Public holidays — The open-source date-holidays library, covering ~200 countries.
- Sunrise & sunset times — Computed astronomically from each city's latitude and longitude.
- Hurricane and monsoon seasons — Researched and curated from meteorological agencies (NOAA, JMA, etc.).
- Map tiles — Esri (Satellite, Atlas) and CARTO (Modern). Switch between styles via the picker on the map.
What's next
We're actively expanding the climate dataset, the city list, and the trip-planning tools. If there's a city you'd like added, a country whose holidays you spotted an error in, or a feature you wish existed, please tell us.
