Universal pre-trip safety checklist
- Photograph your passport — store it in cloud (iCloud, Google Drive) + email to yourself. Replacement processing is 5× faster with a copy on hand.
- Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation ≥ $250,000. A single ambulance flight from a remote area to home country can cost $100k+.
- Register your trip with your government's traveler-registration service. US: STEP. UK: GOV.UK travel advice. Canada: ROCA. Australia: Smartraveller. Free, takes 5 min, gets you alerts and lets embassy find you in disasters.
- Save 2 backup contacts — one local (your hotel) and one at home (someone with copies of your travel docs, passport scan, insurance details).
- Know the local emergency number — saved in your phone with the country code so it works from any line.
- Have a "lost wallet" plan: some cash hidden separately from your wallet, a backup credit card in your hotel safe, and your bank's international fraud number saved offline.
