Synchronous Fireflies, Great Smoky Mountains
One of only ~20 firefly species in the world that flash in sync. Tens of thousands of bugs blink in unison, creating waves of light through the forest. Park lottery limits visitors.
Practical info
Lottery in late April for 8-night peak access at Elkmont. No flashlights (or red filters only). Bring red-light headlamp.
Less-crowded alternatives
- Selangor, Malaysia (year-round) — mangrove fireflies, also synchronous
