The quirk: Mobile-only economy (WeChat Pay + Alipay)
What's going on
China is essentially cashless via WeChat Pay + Alipay. Tourists struggled to use these until 2024 changes.
The smart-traveler strategy
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay BEFORE arrival — both now accept foreign cards (Visa/Mastercard) for tourists.
- Carry some ¥100 notes for backup — many small vendors still accept cash.
- Hotels accept credit cards. Most other places: mobile only.
- ATMs work but limit is low — better to use cards via mobile apps.
