The quirk: ATM fees vary by country
What's going on
Within EU, ATM use mostly free with EU debit cards. Non-EU residents pay variable fees per country.
The smart-traveler strategy
- DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion): ALWAYS choose to be charged in local currency, never your home currency. DCC adds 3-8%.
- Spain + Italy + Greece: some ATMs charge €4-7 even for EU cards (the Euronet ATMs especially).
- Use bank ATMs (BBVA, Santander, etc.), not standalone (Euronet, Travelex).
