Tipping in Japan
Bottom line
Don't tip. Locals don't, and it can cause confusion or offense.

Cultural context
JAPAN IS A TIP-FREE COUNTRY. Service is included in prices and Japanese pride in service quality means workers do not want tips. Exceptions: ryokan (Japanese inns) sometimes accept a 'kokorozuke' tip given in a sealed envelope on arrival. Tour guides may accept tips — but pre-arrange with their company.
