Currency hacks: Japan
The quirk: Cash culture + ATM limitations
What's going on
Japan is more cash-heavy than its tech reputation suggests. Many small restaurants + shrines cash only. 7-Eleven ATMs the only foreign-friendly option historically.
The smart-traveler strategy
- Withdraw at 7-Eleven (7-Bank) ATMs or Japan Post ATMs — most reliable for foreign cards.
- IC cards (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA) for transit + many convenience stores.
- Carry ¥5,000-10,000 daily cash for restaurants + tipping.
- Credit cards accepted at chains + hotels + major restaurants. Visa/Mastercard wins, JCB-only places exist.
